Big Lottery Fund gives nearly £8m to community advice providers: Third Sector, 9 August 2010
The Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities funding stream has given 33 voluntary organisations in England a total of almost £8m in the last month.
Derbyshire Housing Aid and Woking YMCA are among recipients of Reaching Communities grants.

One in three charities have no reserves: NCVO, 6 August 2010
New figures from NCVO suggest that one in three operating charities have no funding in reserve, and the median reserve level for those in receipt of state funding is only one month's worth of expenditure.

First draft of new charity accounting rules could be published by end of the year: Third Sector, 1 June 2010
The Accounting Standards Board hopes to present the first draft of a new accounting regime for charities and other public benefit entities by the end of the year.
The rules will be drawn up as part of the process of bringing the UK's accounting regulations in line with new International Financial Reporting Standards.

Charities have intensified their fundraising efforts say consultancy firm: Third Sector, 28 April 2010
More than 80 per cent of interim managers working for charities say their organisations have increased their fundraising efforts in the past six months, according to research by consultancy firm Russam GMS.
In a poll of 450 interim managers on the firm's books in March, 84 per cent said their charities had placed a greater emphasis on fundraising in order to meet a real or anticipated shortfall in income.

Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland to resume grantmaking from mid-April: 6 April 2010
The foundation has announced that it is to resume grantmaking after suspending its programmes due to a dispute with the Lloyds Banking Group.

Charities are missing out by failing to ask regular donors to increase the amount they give to keep up with inflation, according to a new report by the NCVO and the Charities Aid Foundation.

Charities believe election is likely to harm direct mail: Third Sector, 4 May 2010
A number of charities have changed their tactics in direct mail campaigns because of the general election, and some believe an influx of leaflets from political parties could harm the impact of their mailings.
Mark Roper, managing director of direct marketing agency Whitewater, said a number of charities had raised concerns that receiving a lot of political leaflets might make people less likely to notice their mailings.

The news that the NSPCC is cutting jobs and restructuring needs signify nothing more than prudent financial management and an emphasis on value and impact by the children's charity. Still, the recession has exposed vulnerability in parts of the third sector, such as a pensions deficit in the largest fundraising charities so severe that a tenth of donations could be used to fund pensions in some cases.

Lloyds TSB to end covenant with its Scottish foundation - 23 February 2010 - Third Sector
The Lloyds Banking Group is to terminate its covenant with the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland and set up a new Scottish foundation instead.
The Scottish branch of the foundation has been in dispute with the banking group over a new covenant, drawn up in the wake of the huge losses incurred by the group as a result of the banking crisis.

Monitor your financial transactions, Charity Commission warns the sector: Third Sector - 28 January 2010
Voluntary sector organisations should take care to monitor their financial transactions after a string of direct debit frauds, the Charity Commission has warned.
The regulator has recommended that every charity should write to its bank to tell it that only named personnel can set up direct debits. Charities should also check their bank statements and reconcile them against their own payment records, it says.

European charities 'least affected by the recession' - 29 September 2009
A third say income has risen in the past year
European charities have been hit less hard by the global economic recession than not-for-profits in other continents, new research shows.
The 2009 Global Fundraising Confidence Survey, carried out by training and consultancy firm the Management Centre, is based on the views of 126 fundraising directors and sector experts around the world.

Recession means people give less to charity - 29 September 2009
The amount people give to charity has fallen by 11% in a year because of the recession, a survey revealed today.
The study, by the Charities Aid Foundation and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, found the average person gave £10 a month to charity during the year to April, £1 a month less than they had donated during the previous 12 months.
